Chella

History & Economy. Founded and occupied by the Moors until their expulsion in 1609, the town was granted a Charter in 1611, and came under the control of the Dukes of Gandia (the Borjas). Discovery of the Abrullador spring in the 19th century lead to growth in market gardening, and economic expansion.

Cultivation of vineyards and the production of vines ceased as a result of the filoxera disease, provoking numerous emigrations to Argentina, and the extension of olive cultivation. After the post second-world-war years, cultivation of tobacco became important.

At present, the construction sector and service sectors are most important. There is also a cigar factory and a chocolate factory. Agriculture continues with production of oranges, olives, grapes and vegetables. Some tobacco is still grown.
